During the second semester of my Junior year I was told about Boys’ State by my U.S. History
teacher. He told us that we would really enjoy it. Our classed asked what we did during the week
that we were there. Dr. Goben just told us that we simulated a mock government. I thought it
sounded interesting so I searched for more information. After reading a little bit about the
program and seeing the video, I was very impressed with Boys’ State. However as time got closer to
leaving I became more nervous. I knew that I was not going to know many people except for the few
that went from my school. Many people had not heard of the program and it was difficult to explain
what I was going to be doing for the week that I was missing work.
As soon as I arrived at Boys’ State we were brought into situations, and right off I could tell
this was going to be a wonderful week. As the week progressed our city and county structure became
a strong group of friends. We all worked hard together to make our cities and county the best they
could be. By the end of our time together we had grown to act as if we were one large family.
There is something about Boys’ State that a person cannot explain. It is a feeling of patriotism
that rushes through your body. I walked away from Boys’ State with even more respect for our
country and what it stands for. During our closing ceremony I can honestly say that I bet there
was not a single person that did not have a lump in their throat, from the pride that filled our
hearts for America and her flag.
Boys’ State is a wonderful experience and I would encourage any young man to take part in this
experience.

I was a little apprehensive before I attended Boys' State. I wasn't sure what to expect. I didn't
know if I was going to be in boot camp or some form of government awareness camp. I was extremely
surprised when I reflected on the first day of State with my roommate. From the very beginning I
received a "have fun" vibe. I knew that Boys' State was going to be a great experience that would
be shaped by my decisions. It was very easy to find something to get involved in and there were
plenty of things to keep me occupied. I was surprised at the amount of fun that I had during the
week. The counselors were not strict; in fact they loved to "goof around" with the Staters. I'm
glad that I had the chance to attend Boys' State. It's an event that I will never forget.

I didn't know exactly what Boys' State was. I heard about it at my school and I decided to sign
up. The experience itself can change a person for life. There were a lot of people from the state
of Kansas that I became friends with. Many people think that Boys' State is going to be boring,
but it is actually fun. A person can learn a whole lot from their experience at Boys' State.
